Introduction
EJ501 – Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) & Automation provides knowledge regarding the concept and principle of automation system as well as PLC. This course emphasizes the relationship between relay ladder logic/hardwired and PLC, application of industrial sensors and actuators through the PLC, design process, programming and maintenance method. This course also provides knowledge and skills in designing of automation system based on the applications of PLC.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)
Upon completion of this course, students should be able to:-
  1. explain clearly blocks, parts, components and instructions found in the automation systems.
  2. construct simple automation sequential control of hardwired or PLC system based on IEC 61131 and NEMA standards.
  3. handle the troubleshooting and maintenance of hardwired or PLC automation systems using appropriate equipment.
  4. demonstrate problem solving skill while handling the hardwired or PLC automation systems based on IEC and NEMA standards.
Syllabus Content
  1. INTRODUCTION TO AUTOMATION SYSTEM Classification and types of automation, basic concept of automation, relays, contactors, electromechanical timer, electromechanical counter and simple logic sequence. 
  2. LOGICAL SENSORS AND ACTUATORS Types of logical sensor and actuator and its application. 
  3. INTRODUCTION TO PLC SYSTEM Definition, terminologies, functions and advantages of PLC. PLC building structure and operation of PLC hardware units and input/output devices. 
  4. PLC PROGRAMMING PLC Programming system, Logic instruction set, Sequence instruction set, Timer instruction set, Counter instruction set, Special function instruction set and application solution. 
  5. PLC APPLICATIONS PLC sequential design and writing programs of PLC application in the industry (examples). 
  6. SELECTING, MAINTENANCE AND TROUBLESHOOTING OF PLC SYSTEM PLC selection procedure, maintenance and preventive repair, repair steps and troubleshoot of PLC system
