CC103, ENGINEERING SURVEYING 1 provides knowledge on basic principles of analyzing, compass survey theodolite traverse survey. This course emphasizes the basic distance measurement, bearing and angle in order to get the shape of terrain and the position on the field. It also gives knowledge and practical skills to students in operating and handling survey instruments and working procedures to perform engineering survey works, booking, calculation and plotting.

Course Learning Outcomes (CLO)
  1. Describe briefly types of surveying. 
  2. Explain correctly the basics and methods of measuring distance, bearing and angle. 
  3. Calculate correctly the differences in heights, coordinates for surveying stations and area of a traverse. 
  4. Work collaboratively in groups to complete the engineering survey work including booking and plotting.
Syllabus Content
  1. INTRODUCTION Definition, types of surveying, working methods in engineering survey, principle and the usage.
  2. LEVELLING Introduction, principle, instruments, terms, working procedures, booking, reduction, checking, adjustment and plotting.
  3. COMPASS SURVEY Introduction, principle, instruments, terms, working procedures, booking, bearing adjustment, plotting, Bowditch’s Rule adjustment and sources of error.
  4. THEODOLITE AND ITS USAGE Introduction, principle, terms, instruments, components and the functions, temporary adjustment, permanent adjustment, horizontal and vertical angle reading, working procedures, booking and corrections.
  5. TRAVERSE SURVEY Traverse, working procedures, bearing observation, distance measurement, booking, calculation, corrections, adjustment, coordinates calculation, areas and plotting.
